Days and hours before infusion
- Work to reduce avoidable stress before the appointment.
- Set a simple intention such as love and awareness, safety and trust, or help my brain find joy.
- Ask your provider about benzodiazepines, opioids, or other medications that may affect treatment day.
- Patients working with a therapist may discuss whether a therapy session around the infusion could support their goals.
Immediately before infusion
- Dress comfortably and do what helps your mind settle into relaxation.
- Avoid solid foods and milk for 4 hours before treatment unless your provider says otherwise.
- Clear liquids may be allowed up until infusion. Stay hydrated and avoid alcohol or illicit substances.
- Bring a water bottle and a small blanket, and plan quiet time before returning to normal activities.
During and after infusion
- Light-headedness can occur and usually passes.
- A driver is required because it is not safe to drive for several hours after ketamine treatment.
- Plan an easy-to-digest meal afterward and follow up with your medical provider.
- Treatment length and frequency depend on individual medical needs and provider guidance.
